Multidisciplinary artist M. Lamar utilizes performance and video projections to interrogate the constant violent and sexualized surveillance of black male bodies. In this conversation, Lamar will be joined by scholar Uri McMillan, associate professor of English and author of Embodied Avatars: Genealogies of Black Feminist Art and Performance, to discuss white supremacist fantasies and the recovery of black male subjectivity. The discussion will address Robert Mapplethorpe’s Z Portfolio, among other sources, that Lamar has addressed in his work.
This conversation is co-presented by LACMA and ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries and held in conjunction with Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium at LACMA and M. Lamar: Funeral Doom Spiritual at ONE.
Please note that this event will include sexually explicit content.
Every year LACMA provides free admission (and a free bus!) to take many disadvantaged and grateful folks to Andell Family Sundays!
