Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323 857-6000

Inspired by LACMA’s Mughal art collection, tabla artist Robin Sukhadia will present a multimedia lecture focused on the portrayal of Mughal culture in the Bollywood epics Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008). Through film clips and musical excerpts, he will contextualize Mughal history and aesthetics, and examine their importance to India’s post-colonial narratives and modern identity. Special emphasis will be placed on each film’s music composers, Naushad and A. R. Rahman. The 45-minute lecture will be followed by a live musical performance by SADUBAS, a duo consisting of Robin Sukhadia and DJ Ameet Mehta. They will be accompanied by trumpeter Clinton Patterson.

Robin Sukhadia holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and has been studying tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri for the past twelve years. In 2010, Robin was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Award to expand his work with music education in India.

Website | Email | 323-465-1334

On Friday, August 14th, at 7:00pm, Chevalier’s will host artists from the Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre for an in-store performance.

Founded in 1985 by Artistic/Executive Director and choreographer Heidi Duckler, the Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre has created memorable dance experiences in extraordinary locations for over two decades. The theatre creates innovative dance experiences in non-traditional spaces and provides learning opportunities to diverse neighborhoods. Their goal is to build community through the performing arts by connecting audiences and artists.

Heidi Duckler has choreographed more than 100 original dance works at unique sites in Australia, Russia, Hong Kong, New York and Seattle, among many others, and throughout Southern California including Lincoln Heights Jail, the Los Angeles River, the former Ambassador Hotel and the Los Angeles Police Academy. She has been heralded as “the reigning queen of site-specific performance” by the L.A. Times. Heidi is currently a Board Member of the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance Advancement Council. She has received an American Masterpieces Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. You can learn more about her theatre at heididuckler.org.

We will have copies of Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre for sale at the store before and after this free event. If you’re familiar with Heidi’s work, you’ll know this will be an incredible, one-of-a-kind performance, and we are honored to provide the venue!

Chevalier’s Books is now co-owned by longtime Big Sunday supporter and former board member Bert Deixler.
