Off Script: An Advance Man’s Guide to White House Stagecraft, Campaign Spectacle and Political Suicide gives us a behind-the-scenes account of pivotal public moments on the political stage, including the most calamitous scenes of political stagecraft since the dawn of the “Age of Optics” (i.e., the new PR term for “what things look like”).  As the votes roll in, come and get an insider’s view with Josh King, former director of production for presidential events during the Obama years, in conversation with Politico contributor and former NY Times White House correspondent Todd Purdum, on Wednesday, June 8th at 7:00 p.m.

he spectacular failure of particular moments of political stagecraft  might simply be seen as cases of bad luck, but King argues that they were actually symptomatic of something deeper. In a world where political image is carefully crafted and where mistakes are magnified by the media, “image collapse” can happen when even the most polished politician veers off course.

Off Script delivers a nearly thirty year tour through the “Age of Optics.” King shows how Barack Obama began his term intensely protective of the presidential persona and guarded about employing the tactics of stagecraft readily employed by his predecessors. As we arrive at the election of 2016 and beyond, we have to wonder: Will our future president follow Obama’s example?

Acclaimed Journalist & Author Jay Newton-Small Reading & Signing Broad Influence

June 7, 2016, 7:00 PM

Chevalier's Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323-465-1334

Jay Newton-Small’s  Broad Influence: How Women Are Changing the Way America Works looks at how women working in the public and private sector and are reaching a tipping point – transforming government, politics and the workforce. And for veteran TIME political correspondent Jay Newton-Small, the ultimate question is not why this is happening but what happens next? Join us to hear Newton-Small’s insights on this shifting dynamic in American life on Tuesday, June 7th at 7 p.m. Talk/Q&A with signing to follow.

Two years ago, the women of the Senate came together to reopen the government when none of the men would talk to each other. It was then that the country saw for the first time the impact women can have when they reach what’s called “critical mass”—usually between 20 and 30 percent—of any body. Turns out that women in all three branches of the government are reaching this major tipping point. Newton-Small takes readers through the hallways of Capitol Hill, inside corporate boardrooms and police departments, on board U.S. Navy ships and behind Hollywood’s cameras—wherever women are changing the way America works.

Drawing on Newton-Small’s 18 years as a journalist, BROAD INFLUENCE presents an unprecedented examination into how women are changing the political, economic and social landscapes.

Attorney & Author Gillian Thomas’ Because of Sex: One Law, Ten Cases, and Fifty Years That Changed American Women’s Lives at Work

June 22, 2016, 7:00 PM - 12:00 AM

Chevalier's Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323-465-1334

In her highly praised book, Because of Sex: One Law, Ten Cases, and Fifty Years That Changed American Women’s Lives at Work, Gillian Thomas, a prominent employment and women’s rights attorney, profiles ten of the most important Supreme Court sex discrimination cases involving women and work. Because of Sex, importantly, tells the whole story –  the legal as well as personal struggles of the women who brought these landmark cases. Discover these trailblazers with Gillian Thomas on Wednesday, June 22nd  at 7:00 p.m. Talk, Q&A & Signing to follow.

Through first-person accounts and vivid narrative, Because of Sex tells the story of how one law, our highest court, and a few tenacious women changed the American workplace forever. Best known as a monumental achievement of the civil rights movement, the 1964 Civil Rights Act also revolutionized the lives of America’s working women. Title VII of the law made it illegal to discriminate “because of sex.” But that simple phrase didn’t mean much until ordinary women began using the law to get justice on the job—and some took their fights all the way to the Supreme Court. Among them were Ida Phillips, denied an assembly line job because she had a preschool-age child; Mechelle Vinson, who brought a lawsuit for sexual abuse before “sexual harassment” even had a name; and most recently, Peggy Young, a UPS truck driver, forced to take an unpaid leave while pregnant because she asked for a temporary reprieve from heavy lifting.

Joyce Maynard’s Under the Influence: Talk, Q&A and Signing

May 19, 2016, 7:00 PM - 12:00 AM

Chevalier's Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd, Los Angeles, California

New York Times bestselling author Joyce Maynard brings us her compulsively affecting new novel about the true meaning—and the price—of friendship. We are honored to host this renowned author as she reads from Under the Influence and invites discussion with a talk and q&a on Thursday, May 19th at 7 p.m.

Helen, an aspiring art photographer, has wrecked her marriage and lost custody of her young son after a drunken driving arrest. At an art opening she strikes up a friendship with a dazzling couple. Ava Havilland adopts Helen with gusto, drawing her into a sparkling social life with her wealthy philanthropist husband, Swift. They begin to fill the aching absence in Helen’s life left by the loss of her son as Helen struggles not to return to the bottle. Then Helen meets Elliott, a kind, quiet accountant who offers loyalty and love with none of her newfound friends’ fireworks. As Helen increasingly falls under the Havillands’ influence and begins questioning her relationship with Elliot, Ava and Swift hold out the most seductive gift: their influence and help to regain custody of her son. Maynard’s propulsive storytelling sets the scene for a fierce and satisfying climax.

Lauren Weedman, Comedian, Performance Artist and Author of Miss Fortune

May 15, 2016, 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM

Chevalier's Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd, Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323-465-1334

Hosted by Joe Donnelly and Slake Productions

What if you’re living what should be the good life in sunny Los Angeles, with plum roles, an adorable baby, and loving spouse but everything is not okay? In her new book of comedic essays, Miss Fortune: Fresh Perspectives on Having It All from Someone Who Is Not Okay, now a Los Angeles Times bestseller, the extraordinary Lauren Weedman gives us her singular and brilliantly funny perspective on how having it all can go haywire. Enjoy a reading, book-signing and conversation by tinsel town’s master of tragic-comic storytelling.

After a gig as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Lauren Weedman scored parts in blockbuster movies, which led to memorable recurring roles on HBO’s Hung and Looking. She had a loving husband and a sweet baby boy. In these comedic essays, she turns a piercingly observant, darkly funny lens on the ways her life is actually Not Okay. She tells the story of her husband’s affair with their babysitter, her first and only threesome, a tattoo gone horribly awry, and how the birth of her son caused mama drama with her own mother and her birth mother with laugh-til-you-cry wit and a powerful undercurrent of vulnerability that pulls off a rarely achieved balance between comedy and tragedy.
