Church & State

June 24 - August 14, 2016 ONGOING EVENT

Skylight Theatre, 18161/2 N Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, California

.

Three days before his bid for reelection in North Carolina, a Republican U.S. Senator makes a heartfelt and off-the-cuff comment after a school shooting to a blogger that calls into question his belief in God. The Senator’s devoutly Christian wife and liberal Jewish campaign manager try desperately to contain the damage.

In a brutally honest and surprisingly funny way, the play sheds light on how our reaction to religion, gun control, and social media influences elections.

Jason Odell Williams is an EMMY Award-nominated writer and producer (“Brain Games”) as well as an award-winning playwright, novelist and screenwriter.

Church & State stars Annika Marks, who has participated in a bunch of Big Sunday events. And it’s at the Skylight Theatre, whose Interim Artistic Director is Tony Abatemarco, a wonderful Big Sunday supporter.

exagoge

August 6, 2016, 8:00 PM

The Fowler Museum at UCLA, 308 Charles E Young Dr N, Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | (310) 825-4361

theatre dybbuk and Temple Israel of Hollywood present the world premier of exagoge, built around the first recorded Jewish play, written in the style of a Greek tragedy by Ezekiel the Poet in the 2nd Century B.C.E. Although only 269 lines of the original play exist, we have used these fragments as a jumping-off point for a full theatrical work, rich in movement, music and poetry. This littleknown play serves as the inspiration to create a full performance piece which functions as both a play and a theatrical ritual, incorporating traditional classical masks, stylized movement and music.

Relating the ancient story to contemporary concerns, the experiences of refugees, immigrants, and the disenfranchised from the 19th Century to today are incorporated to highlight the inclusive nature of the Exodus narrative, as well as the ongoing crises of peoples fleeing oppression throughout the world. The Leimert Park Choir will provide the live musical vocabulary for the work, the voices of their young artists offering a glimpse into the future, where today’s children become tomorrow’s leaders and the ones who will carry on the lessons we have given them, hopefully for the better.

Join us for a unique world premiere of an ancient theatrical work.

Exogoge’s music director is Michael Skloff, one of Big Sunday’s longest supporters and a member of our board.
