Help Support “Chicks Who Make Flicks”

February 4, 2016 - 4, 2017 ONGOING EVENT

Virtual, , Los Angeles, California

Website | Email |

Women writers and directors in the entertainment industry constantly encounter roadblocks when attempting to advance their careers – even when they are just as talented and capable as their male counterparts. Women actors have a similar problem simply because the number of female roles is significantly less than for men.  Friend of Big Sunday Amy Lloyd and her partner Christina Gray have combined efforts to combat this issue with a special IndieGogo campaign for their production company “Chicks Who Make Flicks.”  This organization is working to do its part to increase visibility and provide more opportunities for women.  The production company creates films made by women, films that tell great woman’s stories, films that capture the voices of women from all over the world and at every stage of their life. Their goal is to create an environment that supports, encourages, and celebrates talented female filmmakers.

Amy Lloyd is a long-time Big Sunday volunteer who participates in our weekly TM@10 events and many Monthly on Melrose events

James Conlon: The New Objectivity in Music

December 7, 2015, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323 857-6010

James Conlon, whose groundbreaking “Recovered Voices” project at Los Angeles Opera has introduced Los Angeles audiences to the music of composers who, like so many of their fellow visual artists, were forced to flee Germany in the 1930s, will speak about how the philosophies that infused New Objectivity in art were also embodied in the music of the time.

James Conlon is Music Director of Los Angeles Opera, Ravinia Festival (summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and Cincinnati May Festival. He has conducted more than 260 performances at the Metropolitan Opera since his first appearance there in 1976, and has conducted virtually every major American and European symphony orchestra. For his work championing the lesser-known works of composers silenced by the Nazi regime, he received the Crystal Globe Award from the Anti-Defamation League.

The 28th Annual Michele and Peter Berton Memorial Lecture on Japanese Art

December 6, 2015, 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California

Website | Email | 323 857-6010

Andreas Marks, Head of the Japanese and Korean Art Department and Director of the Clark Center at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, presents “More Than Just a Moment of Success: Utagawa Kunisada, Japan’s Most Prolific Print Designer.”

Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) was the most sought-after print designer of his day, eclipsing both of today’s favorites Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858). Kunisada ascended to fame due in part to the sheer scale of his output—he created more than 15,000 designs, a body of work easily surpassing that of any other print artist. Illustrations for almost 600 books likewise added to Kunisada’s reputation. In the early 1810s he established his own studio and over the course of his career trained more than one hundred students. Initially creating designs featuring beauties, Kunisada developed into a master of capturing the virtuosity and particular qualities that made kabuki actors unique. Over a period of some fifty years Kunisada dominated the field of actor prints by setting new trends and immortalizing all of the great performances and actors. This lecture will provide a glimpse into the world of Kunisada’s prints using examples from the Barbara S. Bowman Collection that will be on view at LACMA.
